Configuration Management Specialist [2022-061]

ITS is searching for a software Configuration Manager (CM) Specialist / Engineer to support Product Improvement (PI) development activities. The CM Specialist/Engineer will maintain the CM stack for the PI team, engage in scrums when appropriate, run the PI CCB meeting and provide technical solutions to sometimes complex problems.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responsibility over the structure and scripts used to build and deploy software within the development test environment, perform accurate and timely merges from other development organizations into branches; coordinate troubleshooting of merge conflicts; ensure backups for all CM tools are performed and verified; deliver software into the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) GIT instance; lead solutions and activities in continuous integration and build; creation and management of rpm files for deployment; responsibility for minor to moderate improvements in the system and/or process; and communication with parties within and outside of the job function including with the customer.

AWIPS is central to the ability of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) to predict weather, water, and climate conditions. AWIPS provides NWS with the means to integrate meteorological and hydrological data into a single computer workstation. It draws data from an array of weather sensors, satellites, and numerical forecast guidance, processes and distributes the data from the 175 operational sites including Weather Forecast Offices, River Forecast Centers, and national centers. AWIPS is the NWS’s critical system for rapid, highly reliable warnings and forecasts of weather events that affect the United States, its territories, and adjacent waters.

As the NWS’ partner responsible for AWIPS operations, maintenance, 24/7 technical support, and Product Improvement, the team supports these critical operations.

Required Skills:


• Strong technical background and experience utilizing GIT and Jenkins or the ability to become proficient within 2 months of starting the position.

• Fluency in the English language with strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to obtain a NOAA Common Access Card (CAC) through passing a Government National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) Public Trust investigation.

• Experience with using a Linux environment, preferably an rpm based distribution (e.g. Red Hat).


• Programming skills in Java, Python and Bash script.

• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in an approachable way

• Exemplary critical thinking, problem resolution and both oral and written communication skills.

• Experience with systems architecture or software development.

• Agile development certification a plus

• Experience with putting together proposals, planning and executing project plans on time, schedule and cost.

• Experience with Microsoft Project, Word and Excel

In compliance with Colorado’s Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the salary range for this role is $80,000 - $120,000. Please note, salary is based on education, experience, and responsibilities.
