Scientist [2022-035]

The NOAA EPIC Program is seeking a scientist to work in a fast-paced Agile development environment for modernizing science-driven applications to operate on cloud and on-prem HPC platforms.? EPIC provides acceleration of community-developed scientific and technological enhancements into the operational applications for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and improved Research to Operations (R2O).

As a member of the ITS EPIC team you will ensure adherence to operational agreements and polices (including response times), compliance to program and NOAA standards and requirements (including Section 508 compliance), leveraging of industry best practices for automation and scalability of assets, and implementation of issue detection and alerts.

The following duties are expected to be carried out by the Scientist:

• Collaborate with the EPIC user community, including universities, nonprofits, and researchers, to refactor component weather models and software infrastructure packages.

• Provide code improvement services to the EPIC user community, in working with computational engineers and software engineers to prioritize resources that align with UFS priorities.

• Expedite and facilitate R2O by building algorithm development support and evaluation libraries.

Required Skills:

• Experience with coupled modeling systems and frameworks.

• Experience using programming languages such as Fortran, C, Python, or C++ in an Agile environment.

• Experience debugging with compiled, parallel codes (e.g. MPI, OpenMP, pthreads)

• Knowledge of meteorological data formats (i.e. HYSPLIT ARL, GRIB, METAR, , NetCDF)

• Deep understanding of weather models (e.g. GFS FV3, WRF, CICE5/6, MOM5/6, NEMS, WaveWatch III, GEOS, ECMWF, NAM, RAP, HRRR, HWRF, ESMF)

• Experience running a NOAAA workflow (e.g. CIME, ROCOTO, ECFLOW, CYLC)

• Simulation and Modeling experience in an HPC environment (cloud or on-prem)

Bachelor degree and at least 2 years of engineering experience (Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field).
